Athy Regeneration Strategy Launched

Nov 23, 2015

A regeneration strategy for Athy prepared by Shannon International Development Consultants, was launched in Athy on 10th November.  The strategy was launched by Ms Ann Phelan TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine and Transport, Tourism, and Sport with Special Responsibility for Rural Economic Development at the Clanard Court Hotel.

We were asked to prepare an economic, social, cultural and environmental regeneration strategy for the town which has been in decline for some years past.  Athy Enterprise Network, consisting of Athy Lions Club, Kildare Co Council, Kildare Leader Partnership, the Athy Enterprise Company and Athy Chamber, commissioned the strategy. The aim in commissioning the strategy was to build a vision for Athy by looking at what could be done to boost the economic growth of the town.

Athy Regeneration Strategy Launch

The strategy looked at a number of towns as an example of how having a strategy can lead to a town becoming a success. These towns were Tralee, Dingle and Westport and the lessons of their successes were identified in the strategy.  Recommendations within the strategy were drawn up under five headings: external investment and industry; tourism, heritage, culture and festivals, local enterprise and commerce; key sites and infrastructure; and branding.

Among other recommendations are the development of one all-encompassing brand for the town, a review of all signage with the Athy brand incorporated into existing signage, the securing of new uses for the abbey site, the Carlton abbey site and the Model School site, the undertaking of a townscape study and the examination of the centrally located sites for small specialised export services and sites on the Dublin/Kilcullen road for strategic industries.
